Valentine's Day has a complicated history that includes a Roman festival, a Christian martyr, and a folk tradition. In ancient Rome, people celebrated a festival called Lupercalia in mid-February to celebrate fertility and the coming of spring. The festival included a matchmaking lottery and men whipping women with the hides of animals. The Roman romantics "Were drunk and they were naked". Young women would line up for the men to hit them. They believed this would make them fertile. Okay, perhaps a bit barbaric, and not scientific, but you take my point. π
